Pangaea: Illustrator 11 to improve performance, add features
By Nick dePlume, Publisher and Editor in Chief
March 3, 2003 - Sources recently provided Think Secret with inside details about the next major upgrade to Adobe Illustrator, version 11. Illustrator 11 is code-named "Pangaea."
Adobe's main objective for Illustrator 11 is to address performance issues, sources said. Illustrator 9 and 10 were sluggish and left much to to be desired in the speed department, and Adobe is aware of that. Internal Adobe studies show that many customers are still using Illustrator 8 for the majority of their work, even if they already own version 9 or 10 -- a shocking statistic but one that isn't surprising to most Illustrator end-users.
Illustrator will also include enhanced integration with Microsoft Office, network publishing, and PDF support. The latter is a complete overhaul of PDF creation and exporting in Illustrator, with support for PDF 1.5. The new version will also include some of the key features that will ship in Acrobat 6, another future Adobe release. As for Microsoft Office integration, Illustrator 11 will, for example, be able to place its content directly into PowerPoint and Word documents.
Other key features will reportedly include a slew of 3D functionality ported over from Adobe's Dimensions software, type enhancements, improvements to printing and asset management, JPEG 2000 support, and Character and Paragraph styles from InDesign 3.
Adobe has paid a great deal of attention to development the PDF and printing aspects of Illustrator, but version 11 will also squash a number of bugs. At the same time, a number of potential features have reportedly been postponed until a later release, and will not appear in Illustrator 11. These include a History Palette, Vector brush, Tool Option bar, and improvements to Symbols and the Graph Tool.
Illustrator 11's release is tentatively scheduled for the middle of June, 2003.
